MBL Associate Fellows - Summer 2002
Four young scientists received money from the Associates Fellowships funded by Gift Shop proceeds:
Florencia Botto, Ph.D., a teacher and researcher in the Department of Biology at the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata in Argentina; Karen Crawford, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at St. Mary's College of Maryland; Bonny Dickinson, Ph.D., Instructor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Diane Lipscombe, Ph.D., an Associate Professor of Neuroscience in the Division of Biology and Medicine at Brown University in Providence, RI. We were very fortunate that both Diane Lipscombe and Karen Crawford were able to share some of their research with the MBL Associates Board during their July and August meetings, as well as join the Gift Shop Volunteers at their annual "Thank you" Luncheon on August 16th.

The MBL Associates Annual Brunch & Meeting took place on Sunday, June 23rd at the MBL's Swope Center. Members moved through a buffet line of hot foods, fresh fruits and pastries and shared in the reports of the annual meeting as they ate. A welcome by Board President Ruth Ann Laster was followed by a talk by MBL Director William Speck, M.D. and various committee reports. Retiring board members Duncan Aspinwall, Molly Cornell, Mike Fenlon, and Cornelia McMurtrie were thanked for their good work and given parting gifts. (Minutes of the Annual Meeting are available in the MBL Associates office in Candle House on the MBL campus).
The Associates hosted the annual Foreign Students' Picnic at the home of Woody and Hanna Hastings in Woods Hole, on June 23rd at 4 pm. More than 40 students and young fellows shared good food, conversation and volleyball with Associates and students from other courses as part of their introduction to life at the Lab and in the Hole.
The R/V Gemma took three groups of Associates, friends and relatives (especially grandchildren!) out on collecting trips in Vineyard Sound during July and August. Always a popular Associates perk, these trips provide a great education about the marine animals used at the MBL as well as a wonderful opportunity to get another vantage point on Woods Hole and the Islands.
