Applying to the Science Journalism Program
In addition to the SJP application form, applicants must submit the following supplemental material (six copies of each, including the application form). Download the SJP Application (pdf format) for more details.
- Statement (not to exceed 1000 words) describing your journalistic experience and professional goals, and explaining how this fellowship or laboratory course will benefit your career. (To be provided by all applicants.)
- A list of science courses taken after high school and a brief description of any science laboratory experience you have had. (To be provided by all applicants.)
- Biomedical Hands-On-Lab applicants only: Your choice of at least two major course or research areas in which you would be most interested (e.g., embryology, Microbial Diversity, Biology of Parasitism, Neural Systems & Behavior, Neurobiology, or Physiology), and the reason for your choicesee the MBL's website for a complete list of summer courses and course descriptions.
Polar Hands-On-Lab applicants only: Please list two choices of research areas at the Palmer Station in Antarctica in which you would like to work (see item #3 on page 2 of this application or visit <http://pal.lternet.edu>) and the reason for your choices. (To be provided by applicants for extended fellowships only.)
- Four samples of your science writing or editing. At least half of the samples should have been published within the last two years. Do not send anything irreplaceable. Do not send works-in-progress or other unpublished works or elaborate presentations such as complete books, newspapers, magazines, or scrapbooks. Broadcast work should be on CD or DVD, with total running time of 30 minutes or less. editors or broadcast news directors should send samples with brief descriptions of their involvement in each story. - A brief statement describing your proficiency in English. (To be provided by all foreign applicants.)
- Three confidential letters of recommendation, mailed or e-mailed by the evaluators directly to the MBL Science Journalism Program, no later than March 1, 2008. Where possible, one letter should be from a current or recent supervisor of your professional work. Please indicate below the names, affiliations, and telephone numbers of those who will be submitting letters on your behalf. (To be provided by all applicants.)
