The Marine Biological Laboratory provides laboratories to investigators who wish to take advantage of the MBL’s facilities, services, and exceptional collaborative research environment as visiting scientists in the MBL’s Whitman Center. Most visiting scientists’ laboratories are located in the Rowe building. However, visiting scientists can also be assigned available space in other buildings, or be hosted by a resident research program, or be affiliated with the discovery courses in the Loeb building.
Visiting scientists must apply each year. Visiting research associated with the courses must be prearranged and approved by the course directors and the Chief Academic and Scientific Officer’s (CASO) office. Visiting research associated with the resident research programs must be prearranged and approved by the host lab, host program director, and CASO office each year. Others wishing to be affiliated with the Whitman Center can apply through the CASO office.
Laboratory rental rates for visiting research in the courses or resident research programs will vary and must be prearranged and approved by the course directors and the CASO office.
The laboratory rental rate for the peak “summer” season is approximately $65.60 per square foot which covers four months within the period April through September. The off-season rate for October to March is approximately $11.00 per square foot per month. The rooms in Rowe are in one of four “Classes” based on their average size and location in the building. Class 1 is comprised of laboratories averaging 228 square feet on the south side of the building; Class 2 are laboratories that average 314 square feet on the north side of the building; Class 3 labs average 249 square feet and are on the southwest corners; and Class 4 laboratories average 291 square feet and are located on the eastern corner of the building. The price structure, based on average size and the rates listed above, is as follows:
Class 1: summer rate (for 4 months) = $15,300; off season rate (per month) = $2,550
Class 2: summer rate (for 4 months) = $21,015; off season rate (per month) = $3,520
Class 3: summer rate (for 4 months) = $16,730; off season rate (per month) = $2,725
Class 4: summer rate (for 4 months) = $19,485; off season rate (per month) = $3,265
Laboratory space in Rowe may be shared by multiple investigators. The CASO office will attempt to find laboratory areas, sharing arrangements and adjacencies that meet the needs of each applicant. MBL does offer competitive research awards which help to support researchers’ visiting research needs including lab rental. Please see Research Awards.
Laboratory space is also available to qualified researchers who wish to spend sabbatical leaves at the MBL. Well-maintained general use facilities and a large inventory of rental equipment are available to help meet the needs of visiting investigators.
