Research in this laboratory addresses issues concerning the aquaculture industry and natural resource conservation. Most of the research is focused on growth, disease, and population genetics of aquatic organisms. These studies have used techniques at several biological levels including transgenesis, molecular genetics, biochemistry, and traditional physiology. Specifically, investigations are being conducted on the isolation and characterization of novel growth regulators, such as myostatin, in fish and shellfish. Disease related research includes the development of molecular diagnostic techniques to detect nodavirus, a RNA virus responsible for viral encephalopathy and retinopathy (VER) in many marine finfish. In conjunction with an Expressed Sequence Tag project focusing on bay scallop (Argopecten irradians) growth, microsatellites are being developed to assist in the identification of wild scallop populations and lay the ground work for any future broodstock program. The ultimate goal of these studies is to develop methodologies and reagents to enhance growth and increase disease resistance in aquatic animals of commercial and biomedical importance.
