John Dale Roslansky
1926-2003
John Dale Roslansky, a long-time resident of Woods Hole, died of cancer Saturday at his home. He was 77.
He was the husband of Priscilla (Fenn) Roslansky for close to 50 years.
Born in Lakefield, Minnesota, on August 30, 1926, he was the son of John Adam Roslansky and Elle (Richter) Roslansky. He experienced the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.
After high school, he was graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, in1948. While in college, he was a member of the Navy V-12 officer training program, where he was identified as the outstanding academic student. He was also a successful college track athlete.
In1948, he went on to complete his masters degree at Corvallis, Oregon, enrolling in a summer physiology course at the Marine Biological laboratory in Woods Hole. His lab partner was Priscilla Fenn. The two were married in 1953.
That same year, the couple moved to Berkeley, California, where Dr. Roslansky completed his Ph.D. in 1956.
He accepted a post-doctorate at Princeton University and took a fellowship at Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen, Denmark from 1959 to 1960. While in Europe they traveled extensively.
He later worked as an assistant professor of zoology at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois.
The Roslansky family moved to Woods Hole in 1963, when Dr. Roslansky took a research position at MBL.
From 1968 to 1969, Dr. Roslansky and his family spent a year in Germany as he worked as an exchange professor at the University of Hamburg.
Dr. Roslansky also pursued a parallel career as a real estate investor and developer.
He was selected editor-in-chief for the Nobel Conferences at Gustavus Adolphus from 1965 to 1975, publishing 10 books and staying active in establishing the annual Nobel conferences.
He enjoyed travelling with his family throughout Europe and the US.
Dr. Roslansky was known for helping others complete their education and enter careers.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his brother, Marvin Roslansky of Racine, Wisconsin; a sister, Donna Mae Schmalz of Los Osos, California, his children, Louise Grosslein, John Wallace Roslansky, William Fenn Roslansky of Falmouth, and Clara Ruth Roslansky Hulburt; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 AM at the Church of the Messiah in Woods Hole. Burial will be in the Churchyard Cemetery in Woods Hole.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Woods Hole Public Library.
