Where to find the essentials in Woods Hole and Falmouth
And other useful information for MBL-ers
Banks:
A branch of the Marthas Vineyard Savings Bank is located on Water Street in Woods Hole. An ATM machine is available there as well as at the Steamship Authority (down at the dock) and in the Captain Kidd Restaurant.

Mail is not delivered to Swope rooms, Dormitories or Cottages. Please register with the Mail Room when you arrive. You may pick up your mail in the alphabetized boxes located in the mailroom (basement of Lillie building). Your address will be:

You may receive and send faxes for a fee in the MBL Copy Center, which is located on the second floor of the Lillie Building. The MBL fax number is: 508-540-6902.

Laptops and Wireless Internet Access
If you have a laptop you can easily bring with you, please do so. You will need it for one of the course exercises. If not, please let us know as soon as possible and we will provide you with one on the day of the exercise. Wireless Internet access is available on campus. Local Accommodations:
If you will have visitors, please remind them to make reservations for accommodations early. The Cape fills up quickly! MBL does not offer housing to visitors, but three inns are located within walking distance of the laboratory. They are:

Miscellaneous:
Some suggestions for what to bring:
- Bring an alarm clock. No clocks are provided in MBL housing.
- Bring beach towels. None are provided by the MBL.
- Bring a bike if you have one, there is a nice bike path that begins near the Ferry Terminal.
Weather:
May and June can be rainy and chilly, especially at night. Pack sweaters and rainwear. Click here for the weather n Woods Hole.
Swope Rooms:
Swope rooms have twin beds and a private bath. Daily maid service is provided; linens are changed weekly. You do not need to bring linens, although Swope towels are rather thin, and face cloths are not provided. Beach towels are a must.
Meals
A board contract for three meals per day in the Swope Dining Room comes with the room. The contract covers meals Monday through Saturday as well as Sunday brunch. When you arrive at MBL, you will be issued an ID card that will serve as your meal card and that will provide you with access to the lab, where you will spend most of your time. Please keep it with you at all times.
Laundry
Laundry facilities are available in the Swope Center for Swope residents. Residents in Ebert Hall, Drew House, David House and Veeder House may use the laundry facility in the basement of Ebert Hall. Residents of Brick Apartment Building and Brick Apartment dorm may use the laundry facility in the basement of the Brick Apartment Dorms. Residents of Memorial Circle and Devil's Lane may use the Pilot House in Devil's Lane, access is your cottage key
Course Schedules, Lecture Announcements, etc.:
Announcements of MBL lectures and local activities and events are hard to miss, but do check the bulletin boards and flat-screen monitors in Swope, Loeb, and Lillie. Also, visit the MBL online calendar.

Parking:
If you are driving to Woods Hole, you will have a parking space assigned to you when you check in at the Swope Center.
If you take your car out and about, know that parking in Woods Hole is severely limited. If you decide to park at a meter in Woods Hole, dont forget to feed it. The police love to ticket violators and tickets are $20!
Dress:
Dress in Woods Hole and at MBL is casual. Bring clothes you dont mind getting dirty or spilled on while working in the lab or field and wear closed-toe shoes. Bring clothing you can layer, along with a windbreaker.
