Why Marine Models?
Biologists value marine organisms because they serve as excellent models for understanding all living systems. They are often simple versions of more complex organisms. By studying life processes in marine animals, scientists learn how the same events occur in the human body and how they go awry when disease strikes.
Research conducted at the MBL using squids, sea urchins, horseshoe crabs, dogfish, clams, starfish, toadfish, sea slugs, and sea sponges as models has increased our understanding of a broad range of diseases and medical conditions. These include AIDS, arthritis, birth defects, burns, cancer, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease, hypertension, infertility, learning and memory disorders, multiple sclerosis, and neurological and skeletal disorders.
