Our Story
Rowboat"Seventeen biologists and a rowboat" launch the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole - following the dictum of Louis Agassiz to "study nature, not books."

The MBL offers advanced, graduate-level courses in embryology, physiology, neurobiology, microbiology, and parasitology each summer. Other hands-on courses are also taught throughout the year at the MBL to meet the needs of modern biology. The MBL's Ecosystems Center now offers the Semester in Environmental Science, an undergraduate program, each fall.

Research

The MBL maintains year-round research programs in cell and developmental biology, ecology and environmental science, neurobiology, sensory physiology, microbiology, marine biomedicine, and molecular evolution. In addition, hundreds of distinguished biologists from around the world come to the MBL each summer to use marine organisms as model systems for biomedical research.
