Our Story
Rowboat"Seventeen biologists and a rowboat" launch the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole - following the dictum of Louis Agassiz to "study nature, not books."

The MBL maintains 20 year-round research laboratories and hosts 275 principal investigators, scientific support staff, and administrators. During the summer months, this resident staff is joined by an additional 1400 scientists and students from 300 institutions worldwide who come to the MBL to study and conduct research. They include more than 300 principal investigators and scientific staff; 133 library readers; and 600 faculty and lecturers and 450 students in 6 summer courses and 16 special topics courses.
